Protecting Young Birds
The Sun City Lincoln Hills (SCLH) Preserve, nestled within a residential development, provides vital wetland and open-space habitat for diverse bird species, including killdeer, California quail, and waterfowl. While these natural areas offer excellent nesting sites, young birds face a significant threat once they begin exploring beyond the preserve.

THE CHALLENGE:
Hazardous Storm Drains
Storm drains throughout the SCLH development feature grates with openings large enough for young birds to fall through, leading to entrapment and unnatural mortality. This recurring issue poses a serious risk to vulnerable fledglings during each nesting season.
OUR SOLUTION:
Custom Storm Drain Covers
WHF is committed to creating a safer environment for wildlife in SCLH. To mitigate the risk of bird entrapment, we install custom-designed storm drain covers on strategically selected “high-risk” drains.
These covers, constructed from lightweight, permeable material, effectively prevent young birds from falling into the drains while allowing for unimpeded water flow. They will remain in place throughout the nesting season, typically until late August.
Monitoring and Maintenance
Our team conducts regular inspections of the storm drain covers to ensure they remain secure and effective. We have identified priority locations for cover placement based on previous incidents of bird entrapment and documented nesting activity.
Working Together for Wildlife
By implementing this proactive solution, the Wildlife Heritage Foundation (WHF) is taking steps to reduce bird mortality and create a more wildlife-friendly community within Sun City Lincoln Hills.
