Chaparral penstemon (Penstemon heterophyllus) is a highly variable herbaceous perennial found in the grasslands, chaparral, and woodlands of California. The purple flowers bloom in May or June, sometimes later. This photograph [number 1] was taken on the Foresthill Divide in Placer County, and it represents the subspecies purdyi.
