Gilsizer Slough

Sutter County is a county located along the Sacramento River in the Central Valley of the U.S. state of California, north of state capital Sacramento. Sutter County is home to the Sutter Buttes, known as the "World's Smallest Mountain Range." This volcanic formation provides relief to the otherwise seemingly flat Sacramento Valley.

Gilsizer Slough

The Gilsizer Slough preserve, owned by Wildlands, Inc., is located in Sutter County, California, approximately 9 miles southwest of Yuba City. The goal of the preserve is to create, preserve, and protect giant garter snake and wetland habitats. The preserve area currently consists of 105 acres of upland areas supporting row crops and the occasional rotated rice cultivation. A portion of Gilsizer Slough, consisting of 49 acres of perennial marsh and 8 acres of open water, bisects the property. The preserve will maintain, enhance, and/or create 162 acres of giant garter snake habitat consisting of approximately 24 acres of open water and channels, 87 acres of perennial marsh, 16 acres of seasonal wetlands, and 35 acres of basking areas, islands, berms and other grassland buffer for habitat utilization. WHF will act as preserve steward to ensure compliance with the terms of the conservation easement and management plan. Wildlands, Inc. will assume responsibility for all monitoring, maintenance, and compliance costs.
